Very scholarly and academic but none the less fascinating picture of the rise of the Reform and Haskala movements in 19th Century Europe and the reaction of the Orthodox to them It was interesting to kearn how social upheavals in Christian Europe gave rise to these new Jewish outlooks The author states that this book is a compilation of his previous papers I would have appreciated it if he gave an overview of the trends in seculsr society at that time and how it affected the Jews as a whole in Europe.
